Welcome

Layne Diehl“Welcome to the website of Mountain State University’s Martinsburg campus.  Please feel free to peruse the site and explore what our campus has to offer in the way of learning and leadership opportunities.  I trust you will find Mountain State University to be a progressive and dynamic institution with many opportunities for today’s college students.

Mountain State University began in Beckley, West Virginia, at a time when geographic and economic limitations prevented many Appalachian residents from obtaining a post-secondary education.  In 1933, several community leaders founded the school, originally named Beckley College.

In 1991, President Charles Polk brought fresh leadership to the small college, and began expanding upon the founders’ original vision for accessible higher education.  The Martinsburg campus, which was MSU’s first expansion beyond its original Beckley campus, was founded in 1999; it is now a thriving educational resource within the state’s Eastern Panhandle.

MSU Martinsburg is known as a leading provider of flexible learning opportunities that bring higher education within the time constraints and economic reach of working adults.  Today, more than 200 MSU Martinsburg alumni contribute their leadership, nursing, and computer networking skills to companies throughout the nation’s capital region and beyond.

In 2004, the University began planning the development of MSU Martinsburg into a comprehensive campus. I was promoted from MSU’s general counsel to the role of the campus’s provost - and came to Martinsburg to lead the charge!

In 2005, our campus extended its bachelor’s degree programs to include traditional classroom programs in forensics, legal studies, diagnostic medical sonography, and business. As part of our commitment to the Eastern Panhandle region, we seek to add new and relevant degree programs throughout the coming years. We at the Martinsburg campus are both honored and pleased to serve you as you explore your educational and career goals.  Again, thank you for visiting our website, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can assist you in your efforts.”
